Which Baseball Card Game Do You Mean?

“Baseball” is the name of more than one card game, so it helps to know which one you want.

  1. Baseball (the poker game). This is the most common answer. It is a variation of stud poker, played with a standard 52-card deck, in which threes and nines are wild and a four dealt face up can earn the player an extra card. The names come from baseball: three strikes, nine innings, and four balls for a walk.
  2. Baseball (the commercial game). This is a separate game that was sold with its own special deck of about 36 cards printed with baseball events such as strikes, balls, outs and hits. It is played with a diamond diagram and simulates a real game of baseball.
  3. Baseball cards as a game. Sports trading cards are not a standard playing deck, but people sometimes make up their own games using them. These rely on the stats printed on the cards.

This page mainly covers the poker version since that one only needs an ordinary deck of cards. The commercial game is described briefly further down.

Baseball Poker: What You Need

  • Players: Typically 3 to 7 or more, though the exact number depends on the dealing version you use.
  • Deck: A standard 52-card deck.
  • Chips or coins: Baseball is a betting game, so you need something to bet with. For a friendly game, use matchsticks, chips or tokens with no real value.
  • Knowledge of poker hands: If you know the standard rankings, you can learn Baseball in a few minutes.

Poker hand rankings (highest to lowest)

  1. Five of a kind (only possible with wild cards)
  2. Straight flush
  3. Four of a kind
  4. Full house
  5. Flush
  6. Straight
  7. Three of a kind
  8. Two pair
  9. One pair
  10. High card

The Special Rules

What makes Baseball different from ordinary stud poker are a handful of special rules:

  • Threes and nines are wild. A wild card can stand in for any card the holder wants. This is the core of the game, and it makes strong hands very common.
  • A face-up three has a price. In many versions, when a player is dealt a three face up, they must either match the pot or fold. Other groups give a smaller cost, such as an agreed fee, to keep a face-up three wild.
  • A face-up four gives an extra card. A player dealt a four face up receives an additional face-down card. The four itself is just a normal four.
  • Wild cards can make five of a kind. Since there are many wilds, five of a kind becomes a realistic hand.

These rules are a standard version, but house rules differ a lot. Costs for threes and fours are particularly variable, so agree on them before the first deal.

How to Play Step by Step

The most common form is based on seven-card stud. Some sources describe a shorter five-card version.

  1. Ante. Each player puts an agreed ante into the pot.
  2. Deal. The dealer gives each player two cards face down and one face up. In five-card versions, each player receives one card face down and one face up.
  3. First betting round. Players bet, call, raise or fold in turn, as in any poker game.
  4. Continue dealing. Each remaining player gets another face-up card, followed by a round of betting. In seven-card stud, players receive three more face-up cards and then a final face-down card. In the shorter version, each player ends up with one face-down card and four face-up cards.
  5. Deal with threes and fours. If a player gets a face-up three or four, follow your house rules for matching the pot and the extra card.
  6. Showdown. After the final betting round, players still in the hand show their cards. The best five-card poker hand wins the pot, and wild cards count as whatever the player wants.

Nine-card version

Some groups play a version called “nine innings,” where each player receives nine cards in total and chooses their best five. This version is rarer, and rules vary, so explain it clearly to everyone before starting.

Tips for Playing

  • Expect strong hands. Because so many cards are wild, ordinary hands such as a pair or two pair often lose. A winning hand frequently needs to be three or four of a kind or better.
  • Watch the face-up cards. Because most of the cards are visible, you can see which wild cards your opponents hold. A player showing several wild cards is more dangerous.
  • Think before paying for wilds. If your group charges for a face-up three or a four, consider whether the extra cost is worth it based on your other cards.
  • Play for low stakes. Baseball can be swingy, so it works best as a casual game night option rather than a serious one.

The Commercial Baseball Card Game

The other game named Baseball is not a poker game. It was published with a deck of cards showing baseball events, around 36 cards in a typical deck. The cards include balls, strikes, outs, hits and a small number of rarer events like a home run.

Playing it works like a simple simulation:

  • The player who is “at bat” turns over cards from the deck one at a time.
  • Strikes build up toward an out, and balls build up toward a walk.
  • Hits and walks put runners on a diamond diagram, advancing any runners already on base.
  • The player’s turn ends after three outs.
  • An inning is a turn at bat for each player, and a full game is nine innings.

Because the deck was only printed for a limited time, you may need to find a vintage deck online.

Common Questions

Can you explain baseball to a beginner?

In the real sport, two teams take turns batting and fielding. A batter gets three strikes before being out, and a team bats until three outs are made. A game is typically nine innings long. You do not need to know the sport to play the poker version, but the special rules for threes, fours and nines borrow numbers from it: three strikes, four balls and nine innings.

Are baseball cards playable?

Trading cards are not a standard playing deck, but some people use them for stat-comparison games. The poker game called Baseball uses an ordinary deck.

What are the five rules of baseball?

That question is about the sport, not the card game. For the card game, the key rules are that threes and nines are wild, a face-up four gives an extra card, the pot goes to the best poker hand, and stakes for the special cards are agreed beforehand.

What are the rules of a basic card game?

Every card game has a deal, a goal and a way to score. If you are looking for a first game to learn, you might start with a trick-taking game such as Euchre, or a simpler game like the partner game Kemps. Rummy-style games such as Tripoley are another good family option.

Variations

  • Blind Baseball: A separate variation that some groups play instead of the basic version. Its details vary, so check them with your group.
  • Different wilds: Some groups choose other wild cards or add jokers.
  • Cost for wilds: Some tables add a cost for each wild card, while others play without costs.
  • No betting: For a family game, play without real or pretend money and award a point to each round winner.
